Looming deadline, it’s 90 degrees in here so the air is heavy with Lucky Strike smoke, and I’m developing a headache. Deep breath. Quick nip of whiskey from my oak desk drawer. Another deep breath. The threat of a headache now quickly recedes. My pocket notebook is open on my desk. Time to turn my notes, scribbled in blue fountain pen ink, into typed copy. The story coalesces in my head. I lean forward and begin to write.
