The Cotton Mills
(NOTE: This is not a relaxing mix, but one intended to spur contemplation.)
Cotton mills, and the mechanization of the spinning process, were instrumental in the growth of the machine tool industry, enabling the construction of larger cotton mills. The requirement for water helped stimulate the construction of the canal system, and the need for power the development of steam engines.
Much of the workforce consisted of children under the age of 12, with poor working conditions; but the jobs were attractive at nearly twice the wage to be earned on farms.
It is always said that children are the future, and many of those children gave us our own.
