Cyberpunk Noir
The cheap Agency is placed in Touristville, the redlight district at the border of the Redmond Barrens slum. It's the year 2071 and typewriters have been outdated by dataterminals but there's always a girl at the corner who's trading affection for money, a bar full of drunken crooks and a back yard in a shabby office block, where the rats live and among them Roger Kowalski, PI and his sidekick Babsie, a young elf he had giving a hand to pull her out of the gutter.
The rain is drizzling against the window and leaving washed meandering traces of Nuyen on their way into the gutter like it was usual ten days to payday. There was a lot of work but too few people with good cred to pay for. The casual gunfires from inside the barrens were disturbing the idle typing of Babsie on her cheap virtual keyboard, she had activated to do the office work.
She'd not been paid either for at least a week but he offered her the mattress so both of them squatted in the bureau at night, working the daytime and keeping the money for a real flat.
It doesn't need much to be a PI like that. A bottle of cheap syntohol, bourbon flavored that you could get for a smile at the local stuffer check if you were trading your commlink id in for their spambot for it. Or a commlink id of a poor sucker out there.
A homeless musician was trying to get a job and playing in the back yard, living under a plastic plane between the dumpsters, playing on his sax a sad melody of someone who has never lost anything. You can't lose what you ain't have.
Time to get some money in, for Kowalski is radioactive in the security sector after messing up too many jobs. He's got a nice little agreement with Virgil who's biz is loansharking and pimping for some of the corners that belong to the Crimson Crush gang. Bonebreaking isn't a fun job, but it get's the money in - or the teeth out.
